Driving in Crete: A Practical Guide
Renting a car is the best way to explore Crete. Here is what to know about roads, distances, parking and local driving habits.
Crete is big, and many of its best beaches, gorges and villages are poorly served by buses. A rental car gives you freedom — and a few surprises.
Renting
Book ahead in summer, especially for automatics. Check what the insurance covers: some policies exclude tyres, the underside of the car and unpaved roads, which matters for places like Balos.
Roads
The main north-coast highway links Kissamos, Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos. It has been upgraded in sections but is still a busy two-lane road in places. Mountain roads to the south coast are winding, so allow more time than the map suggests.
Local habits
- Slower drivers often move onto the hard shoulder to let others pass.
- Watch for goats on mountain roads.
- Village lanes can be very narrow; park at the edge and walk in.

Chania to Heraklion takes around 2 hours, Heraklion to Agios Nikolaos about 1 hour, and Chania to Elafonissi about 2 hours.
