Mykonos is glamorous and lively, but there is more to it than beach clubs. Wander the lanes of Chora, watch the sunset at Little Venice, take a boat to sacred Delos and find quieter beaches on the north coast.
Highlights
- Little Venice at sunset and the Kato Mili windmills
- The maze of Chora and the Paraportiani church
- Day trip to the archaeological site of Delos (UNESCO)
- Beaches from Psarou and Platis Gialos to quieter Agios Sostis
- Ftelia for windsurfing
- Ano Mera village and the Panagia Tourliani monastery
Few Greek islands are as well known as Mykonos. Chora, the main town, is a dazzling knot of whitewashed lanes, blue doors and boutiques designed to confuse pirates — and it still confuses visitors today.
Delos
Don't leave without visiting Delos, a short boat ride away. The entire island is an archaeological site: the mythical birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, with the Terrace of the Lions, mosaics and the ruins of a once-busy ancient port. Boats leave from the old port in the morning; take water and a hat.
Beaches
The south coast has the organised beaches and clubs (Paradise, Super Paradise, Psarou, Elia). The north is wilder and windier but quieter — Agios Sostis and Panormos are favourites.
Budget tips
Mykonos is one of Greece's most expensive islands in high season. Visit in June or September, stay outside Chora and use the local buses or sea taxis to keep costs down.
☀️ Best time to visit
June and September balance warm weather and slightly lower prices. July and August are peak season and the meltemi wind can blow strongly. Many hotels and restaurants close from November to April.
🧭 Getting there & around
Mykonos Airport (JMK) has domestic flights from Athens and summer international flights. Ferries run from Piraeus and Rafina (roughly 2.5–5.5 hours depending on vessel) and connect with Tinos, Naxos, Paros and Santorini. Buses link Chora with the main beaches; quad bikes and cars can be rented.
