Santorini's whitewashed villages hang above a vast volcanic caldera, creating the most famous views in Greece. Come for the sunsets, stay for volcanic wines, black-sand beaches and the Bronze Age town at Akrotiri.

Highlights

  • Sunset at Oia — or the quieter view from Imerovigli and Skaros Rock
  • The caldera-edge hike from Fira to Oia (about 10 km)
  • Prehistoric Akrotiri, preserved under volcanic ash
  • Assyrtiko wine tasting at a local winery
  • Black-sand beaches at Perissa and Kamari
  • Boat trip to the volcano and hot springs

Santorini is the remnant of a huge volcanic eruption around 3,600 years ago. What remains is a crescent of cliffs, up to 300 metres high, with Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia perched along the rim.

Seeing the caldera

The walk from Fira to Oia follows the cliff edge and takes three to four hours; start early to avoid heat. For sunset, Oia's castle is famous but packed — many visitors prefer Imerovigli or a caldera-view terrace.

Beyond the views

Akrotiri, a Minoan-era town buried by the eruption, is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Aegean. Santorini's vines grow in basket shapes low to the ground to survive wind and drought; the crisp Assyrtiko white and sweet Vinsanto are the signature wines.

Beat the crowds

Cruise ships can bring thousands of day visitors at once. Explore Fira and Oia early or late, spend the middle of the day at a winery or beach, and consider staying in a quieter village such as Pyrgos or Megalochori.

☀️ Best time to visit

May–June and September–October for warm weather without peak crowds. July and August are very busy and expensive. Winter is quiet, with many hotels closed, but the views remain.

🧭 Getting there & around

Santorini Airport (JTR) has flights from Athens and many European cities in summer. Ferries from Piraeus take about 5–8 hours (high-speed boats are faster) and link to the other Cyclades and Crete. Buses run from Fira to most villages; rent a car or ATV for flexibility, but parking in Oia and Fira is limited.
