Crete is almost a country of its own, with high mountains, deep gorges, Venetian harbours and some of Greece's best beaches. You could spend a month here and barely scratch the surface.
Highlights
- Minoan palace of Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum
- Chania's Venetian harbour and old town
- Hiking the Samaria Gorge (seasonal, usually May–October)
- Pink-tinged sand at Elafonissi and the lagoon at Balos
- Spinalonga island fortress off Elounda
- Mountain villages, raki and Cretan cooking
Crete stretches about 260 km from east to west, so it pays to focus on one or two areas. The west (Chania, Rethymno) has the dramatic beaches and gorges; the centre has Heraklion and Knossos; the east (Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, Sitia) is quieter and has palm-fringed Vai.
History
Crete was the heart of the Minoan civilisation. See the palace at Knossos, then the finds themselves in the excellent Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Phaistos in the south is quieter and set in a beautiful landscape.
Outdoors
The Samaria Gorge is one of Europe's classic hikes — about 16 km downhill to the Libyan Sea, finishing at Agia Roumeli, where boats take you onward. Imbros and Aradena gorges are shorter alternatives.
Food
Cretan food is a highlight: dakos (barley rusk with tomato and cheese), slow-cooked lamb, snails, wild greens, graviera cheese and plenty of olive oil, finished with a shot of raki offered on the house.
☀️ Best time to visit
April–June and September–October. Crete has one of the longest seasons in Greece; the sea stays warm into late October. Mid-summer is hot, especially inland and on the south coast.
🧭 Getting there & around
Two main airports: Heraklion (HER) and Chania (CHQ), both with many summer flights from Europe. Overnight ferries run from Piraeus to Heraklion and Chania (Souda), with summer connections to Santorini and other Cyclades. A rental car is the best way to explore; KTEL buses link the main towns.
