Preveli Beach, Crete: Palm Forest and River Lagoon
Preveli Beach is one of Crete’s most iconic landscapes, where the Kourtaliotiko Gorge river flows into the Libyan Sea through a dense palm forest.

The Landscape of Preveli
Preveli Beach, also known as Finikas, is situated on the southern coast of Crete, south of the town of Rethymno. It is defined by the dramatic meeting point of the Megalopotamos River and the Libyan Sea. The river, which flows through the steep Kourtaliotiko Gorge, creates a fresh-water lagoon before spilling into the ocean, flanked by a unique colony of Theophrastus palm trees. This rare ecosystem creates a striking contrast between the golden sand, the deep green of the palm forest, and the crystalline blue of the water.
How to Reach the Beach
Accessing Preveli requires a bit of effort, which helps preserve its character. There are three primary ways to reach the shore:
- The Hiking Path: The most common approach is from the parking area near the Preveli Monastery. A long staircase leads down the cliffside to the beach. The descent is relatively straightforward, but the return climb is steep and requires moderate fitness, especially during the heat of the day.
- The Boat Trip: During the summer season, excursion boats depart from the nearby village of Plakias or the port of Agia Galini. This is the most relaxing way to arrive, allowing you to bypass the hike entirely and view the dramatic coastline from the water.
- The River Path: For those who prefer a different perspective, there is a path that starts from the Drimiskiano Ammoudi beach nearby. This route involves a walk over the headland and a crossing of the river, offering views of the palm forest from the interior.
What to Expect on Arrival
The beach itself is composed of sand and smooth pebbles. The water temperature is noticeably cooler than the northern coast of Crete because of the river flowing into the sea. You can swim in the lagoon, which is often calm and sheltered by the surrounding trees, or head out into the deeper waters of the Libyan Sea. The palm forest is a protected area, and visitors are expected to respect the environment by staying on marked paths and carrying out all trash.
Because of its popularity, Preveli can become very crowded during the peak summer months of July and August. The beach is largely unorganized, meaning there are no rows of sunbeds or umbrellas. Visitors should come prepared with their own shade, water, and snacks, as facilities are extremely limited on the sand itself.
Safety and Practical Considerations
While the lagoon is generally safe for swimming, the open sea can experience strong currents and waves when the southern winds pick up. Always check local conditions before swimming, especially if you are not a strong swimmer. The cliffs surrounding the beach are prone to erosion; stay within the designated areas and avoid walking directly beneath steep rock faces. The best time to visit is early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the intense midday sun and the largest crowds. Outside of the peak season, such as in late spring or early autumn, the beach is significantly quieter and more pleasant to explore.
Exploring the Surroundings
Preveli is located in the Rethymno region, making it an excellent day trip from Rethymno town. While in the area, consider visiting the historic Preveli Monastery, which overlooks the Libyan Sea and plays a significant role in Cretan history. The nearby village of Plakias offers a wide range of tavernas, cafes, and accommodation options, providing a convenient base for exploring other southern beaches like Damnoni and Ammoudi.
Practical Tips for Your Visit
- Footwear: Wear sturdy shoes for the descent from the parking area; flip-flops are not recommended for the rocky path.
- Supplies: Bring plenty of drinking water and high-factor sun protection, as there is very little shade on the beach itself.
- Timing: Arrive early in the morning to secure a parking spot and enjoy the beach before the excursion boats arrive.
- Respect the Environment: This is a protected natural site. Do not pick palm fronds, do not leave litter, and ensure you leave the ecosystem exactly as you found it.
- Transportation: If driving from Rethymno, allow enough time to navigate the winding roads through the mountains. Check local weather reports for wind speed, as high winds on the south coast can make the sea choppy.
