Santorini Without the Crowds: When to Go and Where to Stay
Santorini can get busy. With the right timing and base, you can still have the caldera views to yourself.

Santorini's popularity is no secret, but with a few tactics it can still feel magical.
Pick your season
May, early June, late September and October offer warm weather, swimmable sea and fewer visitors than peak summer.
Time your day
Cruise passengers tend to fill Fira and Oia from late morning to late afternoon. Explore the caldera villages early, head to a beach, winery or Akrotiri in the middle of the day, and return for the evening.
Stay somewhere quieter
- Imerovigli — the highest point on the caldera, with superb views and a calmer feel.
- Pyrgos — a hilltop village with a Venetian castle and panoramic views.
- Megalochori — traditional, peaceful and close to wineries.
Sunset alternatives
Oia's castle is famously crowded. Try Skaros Rock in Imerovigli, the lighthouse at Akrotiri, or a terrace in Pyrgos.
