Top Things to Do in Agios Nikolaos

Agios Nikolaos is one of Crete's most appealing seaside towns, built around a small lake and within easy reach of Spinalonga, Elounda and the mountains.

Agios Nikolaos sits on the northeastern coast of Crete, a town that manages to feel both lively and laid-back. Its centrepiece is a small lake linked to the sea, surrounded by cafés, bars and restaurants, and within a short drive or boat ride you can reach some of the island's most memorable sights. Whether you have a few days or a week, here are the things worth prioritising.

Stroll around Lake Voulismeni

The first thing most visitors do is walk the circuit around Lake Voulismeni. Unusually for a Greek town, the lake is connected to the sea by a narrow channel, so its water is deep and salty and its surface often reflects the boats moored along the edges. Tables spill onto the pavement around the water, making it an ideal spot for a coffee in the morning or a drink as the light fades. Local legend links the lake to a goddess who bathed there, and it remains the natural heart of the town.

Take a boat trip to Spinalonga

Few excursions from Agios Nikolaos are as rewarding as the boat trip to Spinalonga. This former Venetian fortress, built to guard the entrance to the Elounda Gulf, later served as a leper colony until the mid-twentieth century. Its walls, streets and abandoned houses make for a haunting and fascinating visit, and it has gained wider attention through popular fiction and television. Boats leave regularly from the harbour in Agios Nikolaos and from nearby Elounda. Travel light, wear comfortable shoes, and expect a fair amount of walking on uneven paths. Check locally for current departure times, as these change with the season.

Explore Elounda and Plaka

Elounda, a short drive north, is a smart resort village with a waterfront lined with restaurants and hotels, and it is the natural departure point for many Spinalonga cruises. A little further along the coast, the small settlement of Plaka offers a quieter atmosphere and a pleasant seafront for an unhurried lunch. Both places are good choices if you want to combine a beach day with a meal by the water, and they make an easy half-day trip from town.

Visit Kritsa village

Inland from Agios Nikolaos, the village of Kritsa sits among olive groves and offers a very different side of Crete. It is known for its traditional character, narrow lanes, and its Byzantine church of Panagia Kera, which contains notable frescoes. Kritsa is also a good place to see local crafts, particularly weaving, and to pick up a lunch of simple, home-style Cretan food. The drive there is scenic and makes for a satisfying contrast to the seaside.

Head up to the Lasithi Plateau and the Dikteon Cave

For a full day out, the Lasithi Plateau is a highlight. This high, fertile plain is ringed by mountains and is famous for its traditional windmills, many of which were once used to pump water for irrigation. The plateau is also associated with Cretan farming life and has a relaxed, rural feel. Nearby, the Dikteon Cave is traditionally identified as the birthplace of the god Zeus in Greek mythology. The cave is an atmospheric site, and it is worth bringing a jumper, as the temperature inside is cooler than the coast. Driving times are longer from town, so plan an early start and allow time for winding mountain roads.

Enjoy the beaches and the local food

Agios Nikolaos has several small town beaches within walking distance of the centre, which suit a quick swim between sightseeing. For more space and clearer water, you can drive or take a bus to beaches along the coast. Afterwards, take time for Cretan cooking: grilled fish, dakos (a barley rusk topped with tomato, feta and olive oil), local olive oil, and wine from the island's vineyards are all worth seeking out. Many tavernas in the town serve generous portions at relaxed prices, and the best meals often come from places away from the main lakeside promenade.

Getting to Agios Nikolaos

Most visitors fly into Heraklion International Airport (HER), which is roughly an hour away by car or bus. Regular public buses connect the airport and Heraklion city centre with the Agios Nikolaos bus station, so you can travel without a hire car if you prefer. If you are arriving by sea, daily ferries from Piraeus call at the port of Heraklion, and from there the well-maintained coastal national road runs along the northern shore of Crete to the town.

Practical tips

  • Check locally for current boat departure times, bus timetables and attraction opening hours, as these vary by season.
  • Visit the Lasithi Plateau and Dikteon Cave on a separate day from Spinalonga to avoid a rushed schedule.
  • Bring water, sun protection and a light layer for the mountains, which are noticeably cooler than the coast.
  • Book accommodation in advance in peak summer, especially near the lake.
  • Wear sturdy shoes for Spinalonga and any walking in the mountain villages.
