Top Things to Do in Kavala
Kavala rises from its harbour in tiers of whitewashed lanes to a Byzantine fortress and an old quarter full of character. Here is how to make the most of this northern Greek port.

Kavala is one of the most rewarding stops in Northern Greece, and it is easy to underestimate. Many travellers pass through on their way to the ferries for Thassos, yet the city itself rewards a day or two. Its harbour is busy and practical, but just above it the streets climb steeply towards the old Panagia quarter, where the houses are painted in faded pastels and the views over the Aegean grow wider with every step. Here is what to see and do.
Wander the Panagia old quarter and fortress
The heart of Kavala is the old town of Panagia, which sits on the hill above the port. The best way to explore it is on foot, without a fixed plan. The lanes are steep and often narrow, with stone steps linking one small square to the next. Look for the traditional Ottoman-era houses with overhanging upper floors and wooden balconies, many of them restored in recent years.
Crowning the hill is the Byzantine fortress, which dates back to the Byzantine period and was extended in later centuries. Walking along its walls gives you some of the finest panoramic views in the city, across the harbour, the bay and out towards the island of Thassos on a clear day. Allow at least an hour here, and bring water and comfortable shoes, since the climb is steady.
See the Kamares aqueduct
One of the city's most recognisable landmarks is the Kamares aqueduct, a Roman-era structure that carried water into the town. Its tall, arched sections stand out against the modern city and are especially striking at sunset. Take a few minutes to walk along the base of the arches and appreciate the engineering, which has survived many centuries of change in the region.
Visit the Imaret
The Imaret is a former Ottoman charitable complex, built to provide food and shelter for those in need. Its domed rooms and carefully proportioned courtyard reflect the city's long history as a place where many cultures met. Today it is a striking building to visit, and it fits naturally into a walk that takes in the old town and harbour. Check locally for current opening arrangements before you go.
Take a day trip to ancient Philippi
About a short drive inland lies Philippi, one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is famous in the New Testament, where it is associated with the early Christian community, and its ruins include a forum, a theatre, Roman baths and the remains of early Christian basilicas. Set aside half a day, and bring a hat in summer, since much of the site is open and exposed to the sun. Many visitors combine Philippi with a visit to the nearby Krenides area, which is a pleasant way to round out the day.
Swim at the beaches west of the city
When the heat builds up, the beaches to the west of Kavala offer a welcome change of pace. The coastline here has a mix of sandy and pebbly stretches, with tavernas and beach bars along the shore. Some of the best spots are easily reached by local bus or taxi, and many have sun loungers available for hire in high season. Arrive early in July and August if you want a good spot under a tree or umbrella.
Eat local food and watch the harbour
Kavala is a port city, and its food reflects that. Seafood is the obvious choice, with grilled fish, octopus and fresh prawns often featured on taverna menus near the harbour. Look also for regional Macedonian and Thracian dishes, including pies, grilled meats and local cheeses. Spend an evening on the seafront promenade, where locals stroll, eat and talk into the night. It is one of the most relaxed and authentic ways to experience the city.
Use Kavala as a gateway to Thassos and beyond
Kavala is also one of the main departure points for the island of Thassos. Ferries run frequently from the port throughout the day, making it simple to plan a day trip or an extended island stay. The port also has connections to other islands in the North Aegean, so Kavala can serve as a useful base or a convenient starting point for wider island-hopping in the region.
Getting to Kavala
Kavala International Airport (KVA) lies around 30 minutes from the city centre, and taxis and car hire are the easiest ways to get into town. By road, the city is well connected to the Egnatia Odos motorway, which makes it straightforward to reach from Thessaloniki and other cities in Northern Greece. Travellers arriving by sea will find the port right in the heart of the city, within walking distance of the old quarter.
Practical tips
- Wear sturdy shoes for the steep, stepped lanes of the old town.
- Visit the fortress and viewpoints in the late afternoon for softer light and cooler temperatures.
- Plan Philippi for the morning to avoid the strongest midday sun.
- Check ferry schedules and opening arrangements locally, as these change by season.
- Carry some cash for smaller tavernas and kiosks, though cards are widely accepted in the city centre.
- Allow at least two days if you want to combine the city with Philippi and a beach visit.
