Top Things to Do in Monemvasia
Perched on a great rock off the Peloponnese coast, Monemvasia is a car-free medieval town of stone lanes, Byzantine churches and sea views. Here is how to make the most of it.

Few places in Greece feel as theatrical on arrival as Monemvasia. The town is built along the eastern face of a huge rock that rises straight out of the sea, and it is connected to the mainland by a single causeway. Once you cross it and pass through the old fortress gate, the modern world seems to fall away. There are no cars inside the walls, only footsteps, the murmur of visitors and the occasional cat stretched across a warm step. What follows are the experiences that make a visit here memorable.
Wander the lower town lanes
Begin at the bottom of the rock, where the lower town spreads out in a tangle of narrow stone lanes. The paving is worn smooth by centuries of feet, and the houses, many of them restored in traditional style, have arched doorways, balconies and bougainvillea spilling over whitewashed walls. Wandering without a plan is the best way to explore. Every turn reveals a small square, a church bell tower or a glimpse of the sea framed between two buildings. Many of the lanes are lined with shops selling local crafts, jewellery and sweets, and there are plenty of quiet corners for a coffee.
Climb to the upper town and Agia Sofia
The main attraction is the upper town, reached by a path that climbs steeply through the rock. The walk is worth the effort, not only for the views but for the atmosphere of the ruins that cluster on the summit. Among them stands the church of Agia Sofia, a Byzantine-era church with an ancient character that draws visitors interested in the town's long history. Take your time on the ascent, and bring water and comfortable shoes, as the stone steps can be uneven. Early morning and late afternoon are the most pleasant times to climb, when the light softens and the midday heat has eased.
Walk the fortress walls
Monemvasia was once a fortified stronghold of real strategic importance, and its defensive walls still wind around the rock. Walking sections of the walls gives you a sense of how the town was protected for centuries, and it also rewards you with some of the finest panoramic views on the Peloponnese coast. Look out over the sea towards the open water and the distant mainland, and back down onto the rooftops of the lower town. The walls are a good place to get your bearings and to photograph the layout of the town from above.
Taste Malvasia wine
The name Monemvasia is closely associated with Malvasia, a sweet wine that was once shipped across Europe and celebrated for its richness. The name of the wine is said to derive from the town, and while the wines you find today are produced across various regions, sampling a glass of sweet Malvasia in Monemvasia is a pleasant way to end an afternoon. Many tavernas and wine bars in the town offer local wines, and pairing a glass with a plate of local cheese, olives or dried fruit makes a relaxed evening. Ask the staff what they recommend, as they are often happy to talk about the regional producers.
Eat well in the town
Food here leans towards the fresh produce of the Peloponnese. Expect grilled fish, octopus, fresh salads with tomatoes and cucumbers, and the staples of Greek cooking such as tzatziki, fava and grilled meats. Seafood is a particular highlight given the town's coastal position. Dining on a terrace with the sea below is one of the simplest pleasures you can enjoy here. Because the town is busy in high season, it is wise to book ahead for dinner, especially for a table with a view.
Take a day trip to the Elafonisos beaches
If you want sand and clear water, Monemvasia makes a good base for a trip to Elafonisos, an island to the south that is known for its beaches. The waters around the island are famously clear, with shallow, turquoise bays that suit swimming and snorkelling. Ferries and boat connections from the Peloponnese coast make the trip possible, though schedules change with the season, so check locally before you travel. Pack a picnic, sun protection and a towel, and plan to return before the last sailing of the day.
Getting to Monemvasia
The nearest international gateway is Kalamata International Airport (KLX), roughly two and a half hours away by car. Renting a vehicle gives you the most flexibility and lets you enjoy the scenic drive through the Peloponnese landscape. Alternatively, long-distance buses connect the mainland to the modern town of Gefyra, which sits at the foot of the rock. From Gefyra you can walk or take a short taxi ride across the causeway to the historic fortress entrance. Note that the old town itself is car-free, so plan to park or be dropped off outside the walls.
Practical tips
- Wear sturdy shoes; the stone lanes and steps are uneven and can be slippery.
- Visit early or late in the day to avoid the heaviest crowds and midday heat.
- Carry water, especially if you plan to climb to the upper town.
- Book accommodation and restaurant tables well ahead in summer.
- Check ferry, bus and opening times locally, as they vary by season.
- Allow at least one full day, or two if you want to include a beach trip to Elafonisos.
