Mount Olympus rises to 2,918 metres, making it the highest mountain in Greece. In ancient times it was considered the home of the twelve Olympian gods, and today it is protected as a national park. Its slopes are wooded with fir and beech, its gorges run cold and clear, and its summit area is among the most dramatic landscapes in the country. Whether you are an experienced hiker or simply want a day out in the mountains, there is plenty to do. Here are the top things to see and experience on and around Mount Olympus.

Walk the Enipeas Gorge

The Enipeas Gorge is one of the most popular walks on the mountain. The trail follows the course of the Enipeas river through a deep, shaded ravine, with steep rock walls on either side and the sound of water rarely far away. The path crosses the river several times, so waterproof footwear is a good idea, especially after rain. The walk is well suited to fit hikers who want a rewarding half-day outing rather than a demanding climb. In the warmer months the gorge offers welcome shade and cooling air, and it is one of the best introductions to the natural character of the park.

Hike to Prionia and the Refuge A

Prionia is the starting point for many of the mountain's classic routes and is reached by road from Litochoro, with the final stretch often done on foot or by local transport depending on the season. From here, the path climbs towards the Refuge A, the best-known mountain shelter on Olympus. The route passes through forest and then opens onto higher, more exposed ground. It is a serious day's walk, and the terrain can be rocky and steep in places. Sturdy boots, layers, water and a map are essential. Conditions on the upper mountain can change quickly, even in summer, so check local advice before setting out and never underestimate the weather.

Explore the village of Litochoro

Litochoro is the natural base for exploring Mount Olympus and makes a pleasant place to spend time before or after a hike. The village sits at the foot of the mountain, with a relaxed atmosphere, plenty of tavernas and cafés, and views up towards the peaks. It is an ideal place to rest, refuel with simple Greek dishes and plan the next day's walk. Many visitors choose to stay here rather than in larger towns along the coast, as it keeps them close to the trailheads. Accommodation ranges from family-run guesthouses to small hotels, so it is worth booking ahead in peak season.

Visit ancient Dion

At the foot of the mountain lies Dion, once a sacred city dedicated to Zeus and the Olympian gods. Ancient Dion was a religious centre where festivals and sacrifices were held, and the archaeological site contains the remains of temples, a theatre, baths and other public buildings. Its setting, with Olympus rising behind it, is among the most striking in Greece. Dion pairs naturally with a mountain visit, and a museum on site helps bring the history to life. Allow time to wander slowly and take in the connection between the sanctuary and the peak above.

See the castle at Platamonas

On the coast below the mountain stands the medieval castle of Platamonas, a well-preserved fortress that guards a strategic point on the road along the Aegean coast. Its position gives views over the sea and back towards the mountain, and it is a rewarding stop if you are driving between Litochoro and other parts of northern Greece. The castle is a good option for a relaxed half-day, especially if you want a change of scenery from walking.

Getting to Mount Olympus

The nearest international airport is Thessaloniki Airport (SKG), roughly 100 kilometres from the mountain. From Thessaloniki, Litochoro is easy to reach by car via the national highway. Alternatively, frequent trains heading towards Athens stop at Litochoro station, and regular buses also link Thessaloniki with the base of the mountain. If you arrive by ferry, you can sail to the port of Thessaloniki or use regional ports along the Pieria coast, which offer convenient access to the mountain foothills.

Practical tips for your visit

  • Check weather and trail conditions locally before any hike, as the upper mountain can be unpredictable.
  • Wear proper hiking boots and carry water, snacks, warm layers and a waterproof jacket.
  • Start early to avoid the heat of the day and to give yourself time to return before dark.
  • Book accommodation in Litochoro in advance during the summer and national holiday periods.
  • Check local transport schedules, as timetables change by season; check locally before you travel.
  • Respect the national park by staying on marked trails and taking your rubbish away with you.
