Top Things to Do in Thassos

Thassos is a pine-covered island ringed by beaches, with marble coves, natural pools, ancient ruins and mountain villages all within easy reach of each other.

Thassos is one of the greener islands in the Aegean, and it surprises many visitors with how much it has packed into a relatively compact space. Dense pine forests roll down to the sea, the coastline is lined with sandy and pebbly beaches, and inland the mountain villages keep their traditional character. It is a popular choice with Greek families and with visitors from neighbouring Balkan countries, and it is easy to reach from the mainland city of Kavala. Here are the things you should not miss.

Swim at Marble Beach (Porto Vathy)

The island's most photographed spot is Marble Beach, near Porto Vathy on the southern side of the island. The name comes from the smooth white marble cliffs and boulders that line the shore, which contrast beautifully with the turquoise water. The sea here is clear and calm enough for relaxed swimming, and snorkelling around the rocks can reveal plenty of small fish. Because it is one of the island's best-known beaches, it can get busy in summer, so arriving earlier in the day gives you more space. Bring water and shade, as facilities are limited compared with the main resort areas.

Cool off in the Giola Natural Pool

Giola is a striking natural pool formed by a rock-enclosed basin near the sea, fed by water that flows through a narrow opening in the rocks. The setting is dramatic, with stone arches and clear water that changes colour with the light. It makes a good stop on a day of exploring, and the surrounding area is pleasant for a short walk. Take care when climbing on the rocks, which can be slippery, and wear proper footwear. Check locally for current access conditions, as they can vary through the year.

Explore Ancient Thassos in Limenas

The island's capital and main port, Limenas, is more than a place to arrive. Its ancient city is one of the most rewarding sights on Thassos. The remains include parts of the ancient agora (marketplace), sections of defensive walls and the ruins of temples dedicated to gods such as Poseidon and Artemis. Thassos was a wealthy settlement in antiquity, prized for its gold mines and marble, and the site gives a good sense of that history. Allow a couple of hours to wander, and combine it with an evening stroll along the waterfront, where the town's cafés and tavernas come alive.

Wander the Mountain Village of Theologos

Theologos is one of the most attractive villages on the island, set in the hills with views over the surrounding countryside. Its stone houses, narrow lanes and shaded squares give it a relaxed, traditional feel. It is an ideal place for a slow lunch and a walk, and the cooler air at elevation is a welcome change on hot summer days. Many visitors pair Theologos with a drive through the interior to see how different the island feels away from the coast.

Discover Panagia and Potamia

Panagia and Potamia are two of the island's traditional inland villages, each with its own character. They are good places to experience the local rhythm of life, with small churches, stone architecture and a sense of tranquillity that contrasts with the busier beaches. Driving between these villages and the others in the interior takes you through shaded roads and forest, and there are often viewpoints that reward a stop. Both make a good base for a half-day of gentle exploring.

Walk or Drive Through the Pine Forests

Forest is the defining feature of Thassos, and getting into it is one of the best ways to appreciate the island. Trails and quiet roads wind through pine woodland, offering shade, the scent of resin and occasional glimpses of the sea. Even a short walk makes a welcome break from the midday sun. If you are not hiking, simply driving the interior roads with the windows down is a pleasant way to see the landscape change from forest to coast and back again.

Get Around the Island

Thassos is best explored by car or scooter. The main road encircles the island, and it is generally well maintained, which makes it straightforward to reach beaches and villages at your own pace. Public transport exists but is less frequent and can limit where you go and when. To reach the island, most travellers fly into Kavala International Airport (KVA), then take a short taxi or bus to the port of Keramoti. Keramoti has the most frequent ferry connections to Limenas. You can also take a ferry from the city of Kavala to Skala Prinos. Check ferry schedules and any car-transport options locally before you travel, as they change seasonally.

Practical Tips

  • Book accommodation early in July and August, when the island is at its busiest.
  • Carry water and sun protection, especially for beach and forest days.
  • Wear sturdy shoes for the rocky shoreline at Giola and Marble Beach.
  • Visit the mountain villages in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat.
  • Plan ferry travel around the schedule, and check locally for current timetables and car-transport options.
  • Try local grilled meat, fresh fish and regional dishes in the tavernas of Limenas and the villages.
