An Aristocratic Retreat

Spetses is an island of elegance and maritime history, located at the heart of the Saronic Gulf. Known for its sophisticated atmosphere, the island is defined by grand 19th-century mansions, cobblestone alleys, and a pine-scented landscape that slopes gently toward the turquoise sea. Unlike many other Greek islands, Spetses maintains a distinct aristocratic charm, largely preserved by strict regulations that limit private car circulation within the main town. This restriction creates a serene environment where the clip-clop of horse-drawn carriages and the quiet whir of bicycles define the rhythm of daily life.

Maritime Heritage and Coastal Beauty

The island's history is deeply intertwined with the sea, most famously represented by Laskarina Bouboulina, a naval commander and heroine of the Greek War of Independence. Her former home is now a museum, offering a fascinating glimpse into the life of a woman who played a pivotal role in the nation's liberation. After exploring the museum, a walk to the Old Harbour, or Palio Limani, is essential. This area is a vibrant hub where traditional wooden boat builders work alongside modern luxury yachts, creating a unique visual contrast. For those seeking relaxation, the coastline offers beautiful spots such as Agioi Anargyroi and the secluded Zogeria beach, both surrounded by lush greenery that provides natural shade during the warmer parts of the day.

For the active visitor, cycling the coastal road that encircles the entire island is the ultimate way to experience the local geography. The route covers approximately 25 kilometers, taking you past hidden coves, dramatic cliffs, and quiet pine forests. If you visit in September, you will witness the spectacular Armata festival, a grand reenactment of a historic naval battle that concludes with the ceremonial burning of a wooden boat in the harbour, filling the night sky with fireworks and local pride.

☀️ Best time to visit

Months from May through early October provide the most pleasant weather for exploring Spetses. Late spring offers lush, green landscapes perfect for cycling, while September is particularly special as the island hosts the atmospheric Armata festival. The sea remains warm enough for swimming well into October, making it an ideal time for those who prefer avoiding the peak heat of midsummer.

🧭 Getting there & around

Travelers arriving via Athens International Airport (ATH) should head to the port of Piraeus, where high-speed hydrofoils provide frequent connections to Spetses. The journey takes approximately two to three hours. Alternatively, one can drive from Athens to Kosta in the Peloponnese, a trip of about three hours, and then take a short ten-minute water taxi or local ferry across the narrow strait to the island. Private cars are not permitted in Spetses town, so parking is available at Kosta.
