The Allure of Antipaxos

Antipaxos is a tiny, sparsely populated island lying just a few nautical miles south of Paxos. While Paxos itself is celebrated for its lush olive groves, dramatic west-coast cliffs, and charming harbour villages like Gaios, Loggos, and Lakka, Antipaxos serves as its serene, beach-focused sibling. The island is primarily known for its two main coastal spots: Vrika and Voutoumi. These beaches are renowned throughout the Ionian Sea for their extraordinary water clarity and vibrant, electric-blue hues that often draw comparisons to tropical destinations.

Voutoumi Beach: A Dramatic Backdrop

Voutoumi is arguably the most photographed beach on the island. It is defined by a deep, semi-circular bay framed by high, lush green cliffs that descend steeply into the sea. The beach itself consists of smooth white pebbles, which contribute to the remarkable transparency of the water. As you swim further out, the seabed remains visible, creating a swimming experience that feels almost like floating in a pool.

Because of the surrounding cliffs, the beach remains relatively sheltered from strong winds, though it is important to be aware of the natural terrain. Visitors should remain mindful of the cliff edges and observe any local signage regarding rockfall safety. Due to the steep nature of the landscape, there is a staircase leading from the beach up to the tavernas located on the ridge above, providing a spectacular vantage point for those willing to make the climb.

Vrika Beach: Shallow Waters and Fine Pebbles

Vrika is situated on the northern side of the island and offers a slightly different atmosphere compared to its neighbour. This beach is composed of fine white pebbles and sand, making it a popular choice for families and those who prefer a softer entry into the water. The sea here is notably shallow for a significant distance from the shore, which makes it ideal for wading and leisurely swimming.

Like Voutoumi, Vrika is surrounded by verdant vegetation, creating a striking contrast between the deep green of the trees and the bright turquoise of the Ionian Sea. There are beachside facilities available, including sunbeds and umbrellas, which are typically available for use during the summer months. It is advisable to check locally regarding the availability of these services, as they can vary depending on the time of the season.

Getting There and Navigating the Island

Access to Antipaxos is exclusively by sea. Most visitors travel from the main port of Gaios on Paxos, where regular boat services and water taxis operate throughout the day during the peak summer season. The journey is short and offers beautiful views of the Paxos coastline. Some larger excursion boats also run daily trips from the villages of Loggos and Lakka, or even from Corfu Town for those staying on the larger island.

Once you arrive at Antipaxos, you can move between Vrika and Voutoumi via a well-marked walking path that traverses the island's interior. This trail takes you through the island's famous vineyards and olive groves, offering a quiet, scenic walk that highlights the agricultural heritage of the region. It is a pleasant way to see both beaches in a single day.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

  • Timing: To avoid the peak crowds that arrive on excursion boats around midday, consider taking an early morning water taxi from Gaios. The beaches are much quieter and more serene before the main influx of visitors.
  • Footwear: While the beaches are beautiful, the pebbles can be smooth and sometimes slippery. Bringing water shoes is recommended for comfort when entering the water.
  • Sun Protection: The reflection of the sun off the white pebbles and light-coloured seabed is intense. Ensure you bring high-factor sun protection, hats, and sunglasses.
  • Supplies: While there are tavernas located above the beaches, it is always a good idea to carry sufficient water and snacks, especially if you plan on hiking between the two bays.
  • Environmental Awareness: Antipaxos is a delicate ecosystem. Please ensure you take all personal belongings and trash with you when you leave to help preserve the natural beauty of the island.
  • Safety: Always check local weather forecasts before departing from Paxos. While the Ionian is generally calm in summer, sea conditions can change, and boat schedules may be adjusted accordingly.
