The Charm of Paxos

Paxos is a jewel of the Ionian Sea, located just south of Corfu. Known for its lush, emerald landscape, the island is blanketed in ancient olive groves that have defined its character for centuries. Unlike its bustling neighbors, Paxos offers a serene escape, characterized by a slow pace of life and an authentic atmosphere. The island is small enough to feel intimate, yet rich enough in natural beauty to captivate visitors for days. Its unique geography features two distinct sides: the gentle, verdant east coast, which is home to the island's three primary settlements, and the dramatic, rugged west coast, where limestone cliffs plunge vertically into the deep azure sea.

Villages and Coastal Wonders

The island’s three main villages—Gaios, Loggos, and Lakka—are quintessential Mediterranean ports. Gaios, the capital, is nestled around a natural harbor protected by two small islets, creating a picturesque setting for waterfront dining and evening strolls. To the north, Lakka sits in a sheltered bay with turquoise waters, while Loggos is a charming, tiny fishing village known for its traditional architecture and relaxed vibe. Beyond the villages, the coastline is the island's greatest treasure. The famous Blue Caves on the western shore are accessible only by boat; these sea-carved caverns glow with an ethereal light, making them a must-see for anyone exploring the island by water. For those who enjoy walking, a network of ancient stone paths winds through the olive groves, connecting the villages and leading to hidden viewpoints. A short boat trip south brings you to the tiny island of Antipaxos, famous for its exotic, white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters that rival those of the Caribbean, offering the perfect day-trip experience for beach lovers seeking pristine natural surroundings.

☀️ Best time to visit

Months from May through early October offer the most pleasant weather for exploring the island. Late spring provides lush, blooming landscapes and mild temperatures perfect for walking the olive grove trails, while the summer months are ideal for swimming in the Blue Caves and visiting the sandy shores of neighboring Antipaxos. September remains warm and inviting, often with thinner crowds.

🧭 Getting there & around

Travelers typically arrive by flying into Corfu International Airport (CFU). From the airport, a short taxi or bus ride takes you to the port of Corfu Town. From there, frequent hydrofoils and passenger ferries provide regular connections to the port of Gaios on Paxos. During the peak summer season, additional ferry services may operate from the Greek mainland port of Igoumenitsa, offering a convenient alternative for those traveling by road through Epirus.
