Mykonos in 3 Days: The Perfect Itinerary

Mykonos is famous for its glamour, but three days here reveal windmills, ancient ruins, village monasteries and beaches far from the crowds. Here is how to make the most of it.

Mykonos has a reputation for glamour, beach clubs and late nights, and it certainly delivers all of that. But spend a little more time on the island and you will find a more varied place: whitewashed lanes that reward aimless wandering, a sacred archaeological site a short boat ride away, and a north coast of quieter beaches. This three-day itinerary balances the island's energy with its more reflective side, so you leave with a fuller picture of what Mykonos really is.

Day One: Chora and the Sunset at Little Venice

Start in Chora, the main town, which most visitors simply call Mykonos Town. The best way to see it is on foot and without a fixed plan. The streets are a deliberate maze, designed to confuse pirates and, today, to keep you turning corners with delight. Expect narrow lanes lined with bougainvillea, balconies painted in blue and white, small boutiques and bakeries, and a constant sense that something interesting is just around the next bend.

Make a point of visiting the Paraportiani church, a cluster of whitewashed chapels that appear to have been stacked together over several centuries. It is one of the most photographed buildings in the Cyclades, but it is also a working place of worship, so dress and behave respectfully when you go inside.

In the late afternoon, head to the waterfront area known as Little Venice, where old sea captains' houses rise directly from the water. Find a spot on the terrace of a bar or restaurant and settle in for sunset. Beside the harbour, the famous Kato Mili windmills stand on the ridge above, a classic Mykonian image that works well as a backdrop. Arrive early, as the best seats fill quickly in summer.

For dinner, Mykonos offers everything from simple tavernas serving grilled octopus, fried courgette balls and fresh fish, to more upscale seafood restaurants. Ask about the catch of the day and do not be shy about trying local cheeses and cured meats as a starter.

Day Two: A Trip to the Sacred Island of Delos

Dedicate your second day to Delos, one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to ancient tradition, Delos was the birthplace of the god Apollo and his twin sister Artemis, and for centuries it was a major religious sanctuary and a bustling trading port. Because of its sacred status, the island was declared off-limits for burials and births, and it remains largely uninhabited today.

Boats to Delos leave from Mykonos Town, and the crossing takes only a short time. Once on the island, allow at least two to three hours to explore. Highlights include the Terrace of the Lions, a row of marble sculptures overlooking the sea, the impressive remains of the Sanctuary of Apollo, and the extensive mosaic floors in the residential quarter. The site is largely flat and walking is manageable, but wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and take sun protection, since there is very little shade among the ruins.

Check locally for the current boat schedules and whether a guided visit is available, as these change with the season. Going early in the day is wise, both to avoid the midday heat and the arrival of larger tour groups. Once you return to Mykonos, you will have the afternoon free to relax or enjoy a swim.

Day Three: Beaches, Villages and a Monastery

On your final day, mix beach time with a bit of inland exploration. Begin with the south coast, where Platis Gialos and Psarou are among the most popular beaches. Platis Gialos has a long sandy stretch with a lively mix of sunbeds, water sports and waterfront restaurants. Psarou is more upmarket, with its own distinct character and a reputation for stylish beach clubs and an easygoing evening atmosphere.

If you prefer something calmer, head to the north coast. Agios Sostis is a quieter cove reached by road, and it suits travellers who want clear water and a more relaxed setting. For windsurfing enthusiasts, Ftelia is the island's best-known spot for wind and waves, with a lively scene among kitesurfers and windsurfers.

In the afternoon, consider a visit to the inland village of Ano Mera. It is a pleasant contrast to the coast, with a central square, traditional architecture and the Panagia Tourliani monastery, known for its ornate decoration and beautifully kept courtyard. The monastery is a lovely place to spend a quiet half hour, and the village has several good tavernas for a late lunch.

Getting Around Mykonos

Mykonos Airport (JMK) receives domestic flights from Athens and, in summer, a range of international flights. Ferries run from Piraeus and Rafina to the island, typically taking between about 2.5 and 5.5 hours depending on the vessel, and they also connect Mykonos with Tinos, Naxos, Paros and Santorini if you want to extend your trip.

On the island, buses link Chora with the main beaches and are a practical, affordable option. Renting a quad bike or car gives you more freedom, especially for reaching the north coast and Ano Mera, but parking in Chora can be difficult in peak season, so plan accordingly.

Practical Tips

  • Book accommodation and boat tickets to Delos well in advance during July and August.
  • Check locally for current bus, ferry and boat timetables, as they change seasonally.
  • Carry cash for small tavernas and kiosks, though most places accept cards.
  • Wear sun protection and bring water for Delos, which has little shade.
  • Dress modestly when visiting churches and monasteries, including Paraportiani and Panagia Tourliani.
  • Arrive at Little Venice early to secure a good sunset spot.
