Top Things to Do in Skiathos
Skiathos combines some of Greece's finest sandy beaches with a lively harbour town and easy boat trips around the Sporades. Here is how to make the most of it.

Skiathos is the most westerly of the Sporades, a green island of pine forests, whitewashed houses and some of the finest sandy beaches in Greece. It is compact enough to explore in a few days, yet varied enough that you can spend one afternoon sunbathing on a vast golden bay and the next wandering medieval lanes or sailing along dramatic cliffs. Here are the experiences that deserve a place on your itinerary.
Relax on Koukounaries Beach
Koukounaries is the island's most famous stretch of sand, a wide, gently shelving bay backed by pine trees that provide welcome shade. The water is shallow and clear, which makes it popular with families, and the beach is lined with sunbeds and tavernas for lunch. Because it is long, there is usually room to find a quieter spot away from the busiest section near the facilities. Watersports are available here in season, from pedal boats to windsurfing, so it is easy to combine a lazy day with some activity.
Take a Boat Trip to Lalaria
Lalaria is one of the most photographed spots in the northern Aegean. Its beach is a narrow strip of pale pebbles and sand tucked beneath pine-covered cliffs, and the water is an intense shade of turquoise. Access by land is limited, so most visitors arrive by boat. Excursion boats run from Skiathos Town and other points on the island, and many trips combine Lalaria with other coves along the north coast. Going by sea also lets you appreciate the rugged shoreline that is hard to see from the road. Check locally for current departure points and schedules, as these change with the season.
Wander the Old Town and Harbour
Skiathos Town is the island's lively centre, with a pretty harbour, a promenade lined with cafés and bars, and a maze of narrow streets that climb up the hillside. The old quarter has traditional houses and small squares where you can stop for a coffee or a glass of local wine. In the evenings, the waterfront fills with people heading to restaurants and bars, giving the town a relaxed but buzzing atmosphere. It is a good base for shopping, too, with boutiques, jewellery shops and local food products to take home.
Visit the Kastro Ruins
The Kastro is the fortified old town that once served as the island's main settlement, built on a rocky promontory above the sea. Its walls and remains of buildings tell the story of the island's long history, and the walk up rewards you with wide views over the Aegean and the neighbouring islands. The area is especially atmospheric in the late afternoon, when the light softens over the water. Wear comfortable shoes, as the paths are uneven in places.
Explore the Bourtzi Peninsula
The Bourtzi peninsula, close to the town, is a good choice for a short walk with sea views. Rocky coves and small swimming spots sit along the shoreline, and it is a quieter alternative to the more crowded beaches. Bring water and sun protection, as there is little shade on the rocks, and take care when entering the sea from the rocks.
Take a Day Trip to Skopelos
Skopelos, a short boat ride away, is the neighbouring Sporades island that many visitors include in their plans. Regular boats connect the two islands, making a day trip straightforward. Skopelos is known for its lush greenery, traditional villages and beautiful beaches, and it is a rewarding way to see more of the archipelago without changing accommodation. Timetables vary by season, so check locally before you travel and allow time to return.
Getting to Skiathos
Skiathos has its own airport, Skiathos National Airport (JSI), which receives flights from Athens and a number of European cities, mainly during the summer season. Alternatively, you can reach the island by ferry from the mainland ports of Volos or Agios Konstantinos, or from other Sporades islands such as Skopelos and Alonissos. Ferry services are more frequent in high season, so plan ahead for peak summer travel.
Practical Tips
- Visit the popular beaches early in the morning in summer to secure a good spot.
- Book boat excursions to Lalaria in advance during July and August, when demand is highest.
- Bring cash for smaller tavernas and beach services, and check locally whether cards are accepted.
- Wear sturdy footwear for the Kastro and the rocky shorelines.
- Check ferry and flight schedules locally, as they change between seasons.
- Pack reef-safe sunscreen and a refillable water bottle, and respect the local environment.
