Skiathos Town and the Bourtzi Peninsula

Skiathos Town, the island's charming capital, spills down a hillside towards a picturesque harbour filled with colourful fishing boats and sleek yachts. Its heart is a labyrinth of narrow, cobbled streets lined with whitewashed houses adorned with vibrant bougainvillea. Explore the winding alleys, discover hidden squares, and soak in the lively atmosphere. Dominating the harbour entrance is the Bourtzi peninsula, a small, pine-covered islet connected to the mainland by a causeway. Once the site of a Venetian fortress, it now houses a cultural centre and offers stunning views back over the town and the Aegean Sea. It’s a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll and to capture some memorable photographs.

Spectacular Beaches and Ancient Ruins

Skiathos is renowned for its exceptional sandy beaches, many of which are consistently ranked among the best in Greece. The most famous is Koukounaries, a breathtaking crescent of golden sand sheltered by a fragrant pine forest, often referred to as the “Golden Beach”. Its shallow, calm waters make it ideal for families. For a more secluded experience, hire a boat to visit Lalaria, a stunning pebble beach accessible only from the sea, characterized by its dramatic rock arch. Inland, the island’s history beckons with the Kastro ruins. Perched dramatically on a clifftop on the northern coast, this medieval fortress offers a glimpse into Skiathos’s past, with its well-preserved churches and commanding views over the surrounding landscape. The journey to Kastro itself is an adventure, often involving a scenic hike or boat trip.

☀️ Best time to visit

May to October offers the best weather for enjoying Skiathos's beaches and outdoor activities. July and August are hottest and busiest, while June and September provide warm sunshine with fewer crowds.

🧭 Getting there & around

Skiathos National Airport (JSI) receives flights from Athens and many European cities. Alternatively, you can reach the island via ferry from the ports of Volos or Agios Konstantinos on the mainland, or from other Sporades islands like Skopelos and Alonissos.
