A Vision of Neoclassical Elegance

Symi is undeniably one of the most picturesque islands in the Dodecanese, famous for its breathtaking harbour, Gialos. As you approach by sea, the sight of tiered, pastel-coloured neoclassical mansions rising steeply from the turquoise water creates an unforgettable first impression. These historic homes, with their ochre, terracotta, and cream facades, serve as a testament to the island’s prosperous past as a centre for sponge diving and shipbuilding. Exploring the waterfront reveals a sophisticated atmosphere, where traditional wooden boats bob alongside elegant cafes and local tavernas serving the island’s signature dish: the tiny, crispy Symi shrimp.

Ascending to History and Solitude

Beyond the bustling harbour lies the upper town, known as Chorio. To reach it, visitors must ascend the Kali Strata, a wide stone staircase that once served as the main thoroughfare for the island’s merchants. The climb is rewarded with panoramic views of the Aegean and a glimpse into the quieter, more traditional side of island life. The labyrinthine alleys of Chorio are filled with charming houses and small chapels, leading toward the ruins of a Venetian castle at the summit. For a different perspective, take one of the many local excursion boats that depart daily from Gialos to reach secluded beaches like Agios Georgios Dysalonas, which is framed by a massive, imposing cliff face. Further south, the Monastery of Panormitis stands as a significant pilgrimage site, nestled in a tranquil bay surrounded by cypress and pine trees. Whether you are seeking the architectural grandeur of the main town or the spiritual silence of the island’s southern coast, Symi offers a refined and authentic Greek island experience that feels worlds away from the more commercialised destinations.

☀️ Best time to visit

Months from late May to early October offer the most pleasant weather for exploring the Kali Strata and enjoying boat excursions to hidden coves. June and September are particularly ideal, as the temperatures remain warm enough for swimming in the crystal-clear Aegean waters while the crowds are thinner and the island atmosphere remains calm and inviting.

🧭 Getting there & around

The nearest airport is Rhodes International Airport (RHO). From the island of Rhodes, visitors must take a ferry or hydrofoil from the main port of Mandraki. The crossing takes approximately one to two hours depending on the vessel type. There are no direct flights to Symi, so the ferry connection from Rhodes remains the primary and most efficient way to access the island for both day-trippers and those planning an overnight stay.
