Day 1: The Iconic West Coast

Start your Zakynthos adventure on the dramatic west coast. Head north early to reach the Navagio (Shipwreck) viewpoint before the crowds. The famous wreck of the Panagiotis lies on a strip of white sand, framed by towering limestone cliffs. The best view is from a platform above the beach; you can only reach the sand itself by boat, so save that for a later trip.

From the viewpoint, continue north to Cape Skinari. Here you will find the Blue Caves, a series of sea caves where the water glows an intense turquoise. Small boats take you inside the caves; you can also swim in the crystal-clear water. The light effects are best in the late morning.

For lunch, stop in the village of Volimes, known for its local embroidery and traditional tavernas. Try sofrito (veal in white wine sauce) or stifado (rabbit stew) – both Zakynthian specialties.

In the afternoon, drive south along the west coast to the Keri Caves. These are less crowded than the Blue Caves and equally beautiful. End your day at the Keri lighthouse for sunset. The view over the Ionian Sea is spectacular, with the island of Kefalonia visible on clear days.

Day 2: Turtle Spotting and the South Coast

Zakynthos is a key nesting site for the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). The National Marine Park of Zakynthos protects the beaches of Laganas Bay, where turtles come ashore from June to August. Take a morning boat trip from Laganas or Agios Sostis; licensed operators follow strict rules to avoid disturbing the turtles. You will likely see them surfacing for air, and sometimes swimming alongside the boat.

After your boat trip, visit the Marine Park information centre in the village of Kalamaki to learn about conservation efforts. The nearby beach of Gerakas is a protected nesting site; you can swim there but must stay behind the marked areas. It is quieter than Laganas beach itself.

For lunch, head to the village of Keri (not to be confused with the caves). Tavernas here serve fresh fish and local wine. Try fava (yellow split pea purée) with capers – a Zakynthian staple.

Spend the afternoon exploring the south coast. The beach at Porto Limnionas is a rocky cove with deep blue water, perfect for snorkelling. Alternatively, drive to the remote beach of Kaminia, where tamarisk trees provide natural shade.

In the evening, return to Zakynthos Town. Stroll through Solomos Square, named after the Greek national poet Dionysios Solomos, who wrote the Greek national anthem. The square is lined with cafes and the Church of Agios Nikolaos. For dinner, try a taverna in the old port area, where you can eat grilled octopus and watch the boats.

Day 3: East Coast Beaches and Hill Villages

On your final day, explore the quieter east coast. Start at Tsilivi, a long sandy beach with shallow water, ideal for families. Further south, the beach at Argassi is also popular but can get busy; for more peace, continue to the small coves near Porto Zoro.

Drive inland to the hill village of Kampi. The views from the cliffside here are breathtaking, looking down on the Ionian Sea. The village has a few traditional tavernas where you can enjoy lunch with a view. Try ladotyri, a hard cheese preserved in olive oil, which is a local speciality.

In the afternoon, visit the village of Maherado. The Church of Agia Mavra here has an impressive carved wooden iconostasis. The village is also known for its olive oil production; you can buy bottles directly from local producers.

If you have time, stop at the beach of Dafni on the south-east coast. It is a protected turtle nesting beach, so access is restricted, but you can swim at the nearby cove. The area is less developed and feels wilder than the main tourist beaches.

For your last evening, return to Zakynthos Town for a final meal. The waterfront tavernas serve excellent seafood, including psari plaki (baked fish with tomatoes and onions). If you prefer a quieter setting, head to the village of Lithakia, where a handful of family-run tavernas offer authentic home cooking.

Practical Tips for 3 Days on Zakynthos

  • Getting around: Rent a car for maximum flexibility. Roads are generally good, but some coastal tracks are rough. A 4x4 is not necessary unless you plan to explore remote areas.
  • Boat trips: Many operators offer combined trips to Navagio beach and the Blue Caves. Book the day before, especially in July and August.
  • Turtle watching: The best time to see turtles is from June to August. Always choose a licensed operator and keep a respectful distance.
  • Sunset spots: The Keri lighthouse is the classic choice, but the cliffs at Kampi also offer superb sunset views without the crowds.
  • What to pack: Swimwear, sun protection, a hat, and sturdy sandals for rocky coves. A light jacket is useful for breezy evenings.
  • Local food to try: Sofrito, stifado, fava, ladotyri cheese, and mandolato (a local nougat).
