Dramatic beaches, cave lakes and pretty harbour villages

Kefalonia is the largest Ionian island: mountainous, green and wonderfully varied. Swim at Myrtos, row across the underground Melissani lake and linger in the harbours of Assos and Fiskardo.

Highlights

  • Myrtos beach from the viewpoint above
  • Melissani cave lake and Drogarati cave
  • Assos village and its Venetian castle
  • Fiskardo's harbour
  • Mount Ainos National Park and the endemic Kefalonian fir
  • Robola wine tasting

Kefalonia's landscape is big and dramatic, so a car is almost essential. Most towns were rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake; Fiskardo in the north survived largely intact and has the island's prettiest architecture.

Head inland to Mount Ainos for hiking and views, and visit a winery in the Robola zone around Omala.

☀️ Best time to visit

May–October, with June and September ideal for warm seas and quieter beaches.

🧭 Getting there & around

Kefalonia Airport (EFL) is near Argostoli. Ferries run from Kyllini to Poros and from Sami to Ithaca; in summer there are links to Zakynthos and Lefkada.
