The Charm of Chora

Perched precariously on the edge of a sheer cliff, the Chora of Folegandros is widely considered one of the most picturesque settlements in the Cyclades. Unlike the sprawling tourist hubs of neighboring islands, the Chora here is defined by its intimate scale and authentic atmosphere. It consists of a series of interconnected squares, each offering a distinct mood, where locals and visitors gather under the shade of trees. The architecture is classic Cycladic, featuring whitewashed houses, vibrant bougainvillea, and narrow alleys that seem to lead into another era. As the sun sets, the village transforms into a tranquil retreat, perfect for enjoying the island's slow pace of life.

Exploring the Rugged Landscape

Folegandros is an island defined by its raw, dramatic beauty. A quintessential experience is the hike up the winding, zig-zagging path from the Chora to the Church of Panagia. Perched high above the town, the church offers panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the rugged coastline that makes the island so unique. For those seeking the sea, the coastline offers hidden gems accessible primarily by boat or hiking trails. Katergo beach, with its pristine waters and impressive rock formations, is a highlight for those who venture off the beaten path. Inland, the village of Ano Meria provides a glimpse into the traditional agricultural life of the island, where terraced fields and stone walls still dominate the landscape. No visit is complete without sampling the local culinary specialty, Matsata, a handmade pasta dish usually served with rooster or rabbit in a rich tomato sauce, which perfectly captures the heart of Folegandros's rustic gastronomy.

☀️ Best time to visit

Months from late May to early October offer the most reliable weather for exploring the island's cliffside paths and secluded beaches. June and September are particularly pleasant, as they provide warm, sunny days and comfortable evenings without the intense heat and significant crowds often found during the peak of July and August.

🧭 Getting there & around

Folegandros does not have an airport. The most convenient gateway is Santorini (JTR), which hosts numerous international and domestic flights. From the port of Athinios in Santorini, frequent high-speed catamarans and conventional ferries connect to Folegandros in roughly one hour. Alternatively, travelers can reach the island via ferry from the port of Piraeus in Athens, a journey that typically takes between four to eight hours depending on the vessel speed.
