Zagori is a cluster of forty-odd stone villages scattered across the mountains of Epirus, in northwestern Greece. The villages, known locally as the Zagorochoria, are joined by old mule paths and graceful arched bridges, and they sit beside some of the most dramatic landscapes in the country. Deep gorges, plane-tree-shaded squares, rushing rivers and wild alpine trails make it one of the most rewarding destinations on the mainland. Here are the experiences worth planning your days around.

Hike the Vikos Gorge

The Vikos Gorge is the highlight of any visit. It is often described as one of the deepest canyons in Europe in relation to its width, and its walls rise steeply on either side of a river that tumbles through boulders and pools. Most visitors walk the gorge from the village of Monodendri down to the Vikos Gorge floor, following a well-marked path that takes several hours in total. The descent is steep and rocky, so sturdy footwear and water are essential. Allow time for the return climb, which is the more demanding part. Start early in the day to avoid the midday heat and to enjoy the quieter trail.

Cross the Stone Bridges

Zagori is famous for its arched stone bridges, many of them centuries old and built without mortar in the traditional manner. The Kokkori Bridge, near the village of Kipi, is among the most photographed, its single arch spanning a wide ravine. Walking across it and looking down at the river below is a simple pleasure that captures the character of the region. Several other bridges are scattered through the valleys, and seeking them out on foot or by car makes a satisfying half-day outing.

Swim in the Natural Pools of Papingo

The village of Papingo sits at the foot of the Astraka and Gamila peaks and is the usual starting point for climbs and walks in the area. Below the village, the Voidomatis River forms a series of natural pools in the rock, where the water is clear and cold even in summer. The pools are a welcome reward after a long walk, and the surrounding slopes are lovely for a picnic. Bring water shoes, as the stones can be slippery, and remember that the water is fresh mountain snowmelt, so it is refreshingly cool rather than warm.

Walk to Dragon Lake

Dragon Lake, known in Greek as Drakolimni, is a glacial lake high in the Tymfi massif above Papingo. The hike to reach it is one of the more rewarding mountain walks in Greece. The trail climbs through beech and pine forest and then opens onto rocky high country, with views that stretch across the peaks. The lake sits in a dramatic bowl surrounded by cliffs, and the setting is particularly striking on a clear morning. This is a full-day walk for reasonably fit hikers, and conditions can change quickly in the mountains, so check the weather beforehand and carry layers.

Visit Monodendri and the Oxya Viewpoint

Monodendri is one of the most beautiful of the Zagori villages, with stone houses, cobbled lanes and views straight into the Vikos Gorge. It is the classic starting point for the gorge walk, so it can get busy at peak times, but its quiet corners reward a slow wander. Nearby, the Oxya viewpoint offers one of the finest panoramas in the region, with the gorge and surrounding ridges spread out below. Go in the late afternoon if you can, when the light softens over the rock faces.

Wander the Villages

Beyond the famous sights, simply spending time in the villages is a highlight. Many have stone-paved squares shaded by huge plane trees, traditional tavernas and small craft shops. Villages such as Kipi, Vitsa and Dilofo each have their own character, and the pleasure lies in losing yourself along the lanes and discovering a fountain, a church or a view around every corner. Accommodation here tends to be in restored stone guesthouses, which adds to the sense of place.

Eat Local Food

Food in Zagori reflects its mountain setting. Look for slow-cooked meat dishes, wild greens, local cheeses and honey, and the region's traditional pies, often made with greens or cheese and baked in a wood oven. Trout from the mountain rivers is also a regional favourite. Eating in a village taverna at the end of a day of walking is one of the most enjoyable parts of a trip.

Getting Around

The nearest airport is Ioannina National Airport (IOA), roughly an hour away by car. From Ioannina, the most practical way to reach the Zagorochoria is to rent a car, because public transport within the mountains is very limited. The roads are winding and steep in places, so drive carefully and allow extra time, particularly in winter. If you are arriving from elsewhere in Greece, the Egnatia Odos highway connects the region to the port city of Igoumenitsa and to Thessaloniki, and it is a good route for the journey in.

Practical Tips

  • Bring proper walking shoes, water and layers, as mountain weather changes quickly.
  • Start the Vikos Gorge walk early and plan for the steep climb back up.
  • Rent a car in Ioannina if you want to see several villages in one trip.
  • Book accommodation in advance during summer and autumn weekends.
  • Check locally for current trail conditions, opening arrangements and any seasonal closures before setting out.
