The Stone Villages of Epirus

Zagori is a remote, breathtaking region in the Epirus mountains, defined by its cluster of forty-six traditional stone villages known as the Zagorochoria. These settlements are architectural marvels, built entirely from local grey stone, featuring slate-roofed mansions and narrow cobblestone alleys that seem frozen in time. The region is cradled by the Pindus mountain range, creating a dramatic landscape of deep valleys, alpine meadows, and rushing rivers. Visitors often base themselves in villages like Monodendri or the iconic Papingo, which serve as gateways to the region’s rugged natural beauty and ancient history.

Nature and Engineering Wonders

The crown jewel of Zagori is the Vikos Gorge, one of the deepest canyons in the world relative to its width. A hike through this limestone chasm offers unparalleled views of rare flora and steep, imposing cliffs. Beyond the gorge, the region is famous for its intricate network of centuries-old arched stone bridges, such as the Kokkori bridge. These structures were once the vital lifelines connecting the villages, built by master craftsmen to span the turbulent Voidomatis River. For those seeking alpine adventure, a challenging trek leads to the legendary Dragon Lake, a high-altitude glacial pool surrounded by jagged peaks. Whether you are peering down from the vertigo-inducing Oxya viewpoint or cooling off in the natural rock pools near Papingo, Zagori offers a profound connection to the wild, untamed side of Greece.

☀️ Best time to visit

Months from late spring to early autumn provide the most pleasant conditions for exploring the rugged terrain. May and June showcase vibrant wildflowers and lush greenery, while September and October offer crisp, clear air perfect for hiking the Vikos Gorge. Winter transforms the region into a snowy, atmospheric retreat, though mountain passes can be challenging to navigate during heavy storms.

🧭 Getting there & around

The nearest airport is Ioannina National Airport (IOA), located about an hour away by car. From Ioannina, the most practical way to reach the Zagorochoria is by renting a car, as public transport within the mountains is extremely limited. The winding, mountainous roads require careful driving. If arriving from elsewhere in Greece, you can drive via the Egnatia Odos highway, which connects the region to the port city of Igoumenitsa or the major hub of Thessaloniki.
