Trikala is a lively, bike-friendly town on the Lithaios river in Thessaly. It is best known in winter for the Mill of the Elves (Mylos ton Xotikon), Greece's biggest Christmas park, and all year as the gateway to Meteora.

Highlights

  • Mill of the Elves Christmas park at the old Matsopoulos Mill (usually late November to early January)
  • The Byzantine castle and its clock tower above town
  • Varousi, the old quarter of stone mansions and narrow lanes
  • The 16th-century Koursoum Mosque
  • Riverside cafés along the Lithaios
  • Easy day trips to Meteora and the mountain villages of Elati and Pertouli

Trikala is one of the most pleasant towns in central Greece: flat, walkable, full of cafés and crossed by the tree-lined Lithaios river. Its old quarter, Varousi, has restored mansions and cobbled lanes, and the castle hill gives views over the town and the Thessalian plain.

The Mill of the Elves

Every festive season the old Matsopoulos Mill on the river becomes the Mill of the Elves (Mylos ton Xotikon), a large Christmas park with Santa's house, elf workshops, shows, a skating rink and festive lights. It draws visitors from all over Greece, especially at weekends, so book accommodation early and check the official dates and opening hours each year.

Beyond Christmas

Meteora is only about half an hour away, and the fir-covered mountain villages of Elati and Pertouli are popular in winter.

☀️ Best time to visit

Late November to early January for the Christmas park; spring and autumn for Meteora and the mountains.

🧭 Getting there & around

About 4 hours by car from Athens and 2.5 hours from Thessaloniki. Trains from Athens run towards Kalambaka via Trikala (often with a change at Palaiofarsalos); KTEL buses connect with major cities.
