Metsovo is a traditional mountain town high in the Pindus mountains, with stone houses, wood smoke, local cheeses and wine. In winter it is one of Greece's classic snowy Christmas getaways.

Highlights

  • The stone-built centre and main square
  • Averoff Museum of Neohellenic Art
  • Katogi Averoff winery
  • Smoked metsovone cheese and local tsipouro
  • Skiing at the nearby small ski centres

At over 1,100 metres, Metsovo often sees snow in winter, which makes it a favourite for Christmas and New Year breaks. Its stone mansions, wooden balconies and traditional costumes worn by older residents give it a strong sense of place.

Try the local smoked cheese, mountain pies and red wine, and stay in a guesthouse with a fireplace. Ioannina and Meteora are both within easy driving distance.

☀️ Best time to visit

December to March for snow and fireplaces; summer for cool mountain walks.

🧭 Getting there & around

Just off the Egnatia motorway: about 45 minutes from Ioannina and around 1 hour from Kalambaka. Carry snow chains or check road conditions in winter.
