The Land of Mastic

Chios, the fifth-largest island in Greece, remains one of the most authentic destinations in the Aegean. Located just off the coast of Turkey, it is defined by its unique history and the cultivation of mastic, a resinous sap harvested from trees found exclusively in the southern part of the island. This rare product has shaped the local economy and culture for centuries, leading to the development of the distinctive Mastichochoria, or mastic villages. These settlements are architectural marvels, built during the Genoese occupation to protect the precious harvest from pirates.

Among these, Pyrgi stands out for its elaborate geometric patterns known as xysta, which decorate the facades of its houses, creating a striking black-and-white visual tapestry. Nearby, the medieval village of Mesta offers a different experience; it is a fortified labyrinth designed to confuse intruders, where stone arches and narrow alleys lead to a central square. To fully grasp the significance of this tradition, the Mastic Museum provides an immersive look at the cultivation techniques and the historical importance of this "tears of Chios" resin.

Monasteries and Volcanic Shores

Beyond the mastic groves, Chios boasts a landscape of dramatic contrasts. The island is home to Nea Moni, an 11th-century monastery recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Renowned for its exquisite Byzantine mosaics, the monastery is perched on the slopes of Mount Provateio and serves as a poignant reminder of the island’s spiritual and historical depth. The architecture reflects the grandeur of the Macedonian Renaissance, making it a must-visit for those interested in religious art and history.

For nature lovers, the southern coast offers the unique Mavra Volia beach. Unlike the typical golden sands found across Greece, this beach is covered in smooth, jet-black volcanic pebbles, a result of the island’s geological past. The contrast between the dark stones and the deep, crystalline blue of the Aegean creates an unforgettable setting. Whether you are exploring the fortified towers of the south, hiking through the fragrant mastic orchards, or swimming at the volcanic shore, Chios offers a sophisticated and deeply rewarding travel experience for those who appreciate history, culture, and dramatic natural beauty.

☀️ Best time to visit

Months from May to June and September to October are ideal for visiting Chios. During these periods, the weather is pleasantly warm, perfect for exploring the medieval villages and the Mastic Museum without the intense heat of midsummer. Spring also brings a lush, green landscape to the island, while early autumn offers calm seas and comfortable temperatures for sightseeing.

🧭 Getting there & around

Chios is served by the Chios Island National Airport (JKH), which receives frequent domestic flights from Athens. Alternatively, travelers can reach the island by ferry from the port of Piraeus in Athens, with the journey taking several hours. During the summer, there are also ferry connections from other Aegean islands and the port of Cesme in Turkey. Once on the island, renting a car is the most practical way to navigate the villages and reach the more secluded beaches.
