Delphi was the home of the ancient world's most famous oracle. Its ruins spill down a mountainside high above an olive-filled valley, making it one of the most atmospheric archaeological sites in Greece.

Highlights

  • The Sanctuary of Apollo, theatre and stadium
  • The Charioteer of Delphi in the archaeological museum
  • The Tholos at the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia
  • Views over the olive groves to the Gulf of Corinth
  • Nearby Arachova and skiing on Mount Parnassus in winter

Ancient Greeks believed Delphi was the centre of the world. Pilgrims came from across the Mediterranean to consult the Pythia, Apollo's priestess. Walk up the Sacred Way past the treasuries to the Temple of Apollo, the theatre and the stadium at the top.

Visit early or late to avoid tour groups, and don't skip the museum.

☀️ Best time to visit

Spring and autumn. Summer middays are hot on the exposed site; winter combines nicely with Arachova and Parnassus.

🧭 Getting there & around

About 2.5 hours by car or KTEL bus from Athens. Many visitors combine Delphi with Meteora on a two-day road trip.
