Drama, in eastern Macedonia, transforms every December into Oniroupoli — the "Dream City" Christmas village that fills its central park. The rest of the year it is a green town of springs, plane trees and some of Greece's best-known wineries.
Highlights
- Oniroupoli Christmas village (usually December to early January)
- Agia Varvara park with springs, ponds and old plane trees
- The Drama wine route and its estates
- The river cave of Maaras (Aggitis) nearby
- Falakro ski centre in winter
Drama sits at the foot of the mountains in north-eastern Greece. Its heart is the Agia Varvara park, where natural springs feed streams and ponds under huge plane trees — and where Oniroupoli is set up each Christmas.
Oniroupoli
For about a month the centre becomes a Christmas village with Santa's house, elf workshops, a sweet factory, post office for letters to Santa, theatre and daily events for children. It is free to wander and gets busy at weekends; check the official programme for each year's dates.
Wine and nature
The area is known for its wineries, the Maaras river cave, and skiing on Mount Falakro.
☀️ Best time to visit
December for Oniroupoli; autumn for the grape harvest and wineries.
🧭 Getting there & around
Kavala airport (KVA) is under an hour away; Thessaloniki is about 2 hours by car. KTEL buses connect Drama with Thessaloniki and Kavala.
